On December 30, the “KAWA NINGBO,” carrying 379 containers of lithium batteries from Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., departed Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. This marked the successful launch of a new China-Europe direct shipping route, designed to support the export of “New Three Products,” including electric vehicles, photovoltaic energy, and lithium batteries. The launch aligns with China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and significantly enhances the international market presence of these high-tech products.

The Rising Importance of “New Three Products”

Electric vehicles, photovoltaic energy, and lithium batteries are now key pillars in China’s export growth. These products are known for their advanced technology, high value, and environmental sustainability. The direct China-Europe shipping route will shorten transit times and increase sailing frequencies, making it easier to distribute these products globally. This improvement strengthens China’s position in international trade and enhances its competitiveness in the global supply chain.

Challenges of Shipping Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are classified as hazardous cargo in maritime transport. As a result, special precautions are required for their shipping. Ningde Times faced challenges with container loading and export due to these regulations, which stipulate that a “Container Loading Inspector” must oversee the process and issue a “Loading Certificate.”

Collaborative Solutions from Ningbo Maritime Authorities

Ningbo Maritime responded quickly to these challenges by coordinating with Zhejiang Port Logistics and other relevant organizations. They established a platform for communication between the shipper, port operator, and carrier to ensure smooth shipping. Inspection teams were deployed to Ningde Times’ factories in Fujian and Jiangsu, allowing them to complete inspections on-site and streamline the loading process.

Efficient Loading and Reduced Costs

To further improve the efficiency of the shipping process, Ningbo Maritime created a specialized support team. These teams provided guidance at the loading sites, ensuring that lithium batteries were loaded directly from the factory to the ship without the need for reloading. The “Same Load, Same Check” system saved both time and costs by avoiding unnecessary delays.

Yu Linlin, Manager of Overseas Logistics at Ningde Times, shared: “The advance inspection service saved us 1-2 days in logistics time. It not only reduced our costs but also ensured that the shipping schedules matched perfectly, helping us avoid delays and penalties.”

Expedited Approvals and Smarter Operations

In addition to supporting the loading process, Ningbo Maritime set up a green channel for administrative approvals related to the direct shipping route. This expedited the licensing process for hazardous cargo like lithium batteries. The use of a “Smart Maritime” platform also allowed for priority berthing, loading, and unloading for the “KAWA NINGBO,” ensuring timely departures and increasing operational efficiency.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Global Reach

The opening of the China-Europe direct shipping route and the proactive measures taken by maritime authorities show China’s commitment to promoting exports of “New Three Products.” These efforts are not only improving logistics but also enhancing China’s competitiveness in the global market. As more initiatives like this take shape, China’s exports of high-tech and environmentally friendly products will likely continue to grow, offering new opportunities for businesses and boosting China’s economic growth.
